Effect of Palmitoylethanolamide Compared to a Placebo on the Gut Microbiome and Biochemistry in an Overweight Adult Population: A Randomised, Placebo Controlled, Double-Blind Study
Randomised controlled trialHumans
- Design
- Randomised controlled trial
- Subjects
- 58 adults with a BMI of 30 to 40 randomised. 44 completed.
- Dose used in the study
- 700 mg a day of Levagen+ (350 mg twice a day)
- Duration
- 12 weeks
- What was measured
- Gut microbiota composition and diversity, short-chain fatty acids, calprotectin, blood lipids, cytokines, liver function and quality of life.
What the authors reported
Triglycerides and IL-2 were lower on palmitoylethanolamide. There was no significant difference between groups in overall microbiota composition or diversity, short-chain fatty acids, calprotectin, liver function or quality of life. Six adverse events were reported, three judged possibly related to the study product.
Limits of this study
About a quarter of participants did not complete. Some blood and stool samples were missing or unusable. Many outcomes were measured, which raises the chance of a positive finding by chance. The study was funded by Gencor Pacific.
