Simultaneous quantification of steroid hormones and endocannabinoids (ECs) in human hair using an automated supported liquid extraction (SLE) and LC-MS/MS - Insights into EC baseline values and correlation to steroid concentrations
Observational studyHumans
- Design
- Observational study
- Subjects
- Hair samples from 58 healthy young adults
- Dose used in the study
- No palmitoylethanolamide was given; the study measured naturally occurring levels in hair
- Duration
- Not stated in the abstract
- What was measured
- Hair concentrations of five steroid hormones (cortisone, cortisol, androstenedione, testosterone, progesterone) and four endocannabinoid-type lipids (anandamide, palmitoylethanolamide, 2-arachidonoylglycerol, oleoylethanolamide) by LC-MS/MS after automated supported liquid extraction, comparing five calibration strategies
What the authors reported
A validated method was produced, using surrogate-analyte calibration for steroids and background correction for endocannabinoids. In 58 healthy adults, steroid and endocannabinoid levels showed no significant male-female differences except testosterone (p<0.001) and androstenedione (p<0.0001). Cortisol correlated with cortisone and testosterone with androstenedione. The endocannabinoids, including PEA, correlated with each other.
Limits of this study
A measurement-method study in 58 healthy people; it gives baseline hair values, not effects of taking PEA. Funding and conflicts not stated in the abstract.
