- Rats with 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA)-induced breast tumours
- Dose used in the study
- Not stated in the abstract

- What was measured
- Tumour area and volume by photoacoustic imaging, tumour oxygenation, liver and kidney histopathology, blood glucose and lactate dehydrogenase, oxidative stress markers, and apoptosis-related gene expression (BAX, P53, BCL-XL, CASPASE-8, CASPASE-9) and Caspase-3 activity
What the authors reported
Palmitoylethanolamide reduced tumour area and volume, increased average oxygen saturation and decreased total haemoglobin (indicating reduced hypoxia-driven blood vessel growth), and reduced DMBA-driven liver and kidney toxicity on histopathology. It lowered blood glucose and lactate dehydrogenase, reduced nitric oxide and malondialdehyde, increased glutathione, and altered apoptosis-related gene expression and Caspase-3 activity.
Limits of this study
A rat model of chemically induced breast tumours; it cannot show effect in people with breast cancer. The authors declare no competing financial interests.
