Lunardelli ML, Crupi R, Siracusa R, Cocuzza G, Cordaro M, Martini E, Impellizzeri D, Di Paola R, Cuzzocrea S. CNS Neurol Disord Drug Targets. 2019;18(7):530-554.

Controlled trialHumansOther animalsWith luteolin

This study tested palmitoylethanolamide together with luteolin. Its results cannot be assigned to palmitoylethanolamide alone. More combination studies.

Design
Controlled trial
Subjects
Elderly hip-fracture surgery patients in a single-centre, randomised, single-blind study; number not given in the abstract. Plus mice given lipopolysaccharide as a delirium model
Dose used in the study
Glialia (ultramicronised PEA 700 mg plus luteolin 70 mg) in patients; co-ultraPEALut 1 mg/kg by mouth in mice before or after LPS
Duration
Not stated in the abstract
What was measured
Onset, intensity and duration of postoperative delirium in patients; cognition, locomotion, inflammation, apoptosis and neurotrophins in mice

What the authors reported

Glialia prevented the onset of postoperative delirium and reduced symptom intensity and duration. In mice, the compound improved cognitive and motor outcomes and reduced inflammatory and apoptotic markers.

Limits of this study

Single blind. The abstract gives no patient numbers, no comparator description and no effect sizes. Combined preclinical and clinical report. Several authors have long-standing links with Epitech, which makes Glialia.
