Jost Klawitter, Cristina Sempio, Matthew J Jackson, Peter H Smith, Katharina Hopp, Michel Chonchol, Berenice Y Gitomer, Uwe Christians, Jelena Klawitter. Am J Nephrol. 2022;53(4):264-272.

Observational studyHumans

Design
Observational study
Subjects
102 patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease and 100 healthy subjects
Dose used in the study
Not stated in the abstract; no treatment was given
Duration
Baseline and after 2 and 4 years
What was measured
Plasma endocannabinoids and related lipids including palmitoylethanolamide by mass spectrometry; interleukins; kidney volume and eGFR change over time.

What the authors reported

Patients had higher IL-6 and IL-1b and lower plasma AEA, 2-AG and related lipids than healthy people. Baseline AEA was negatively associated with kidney volume growth and positively with change in kidney function, and palmitoylethanolamide was positively associated with yearly change in eGFR.

Limits of this study

An observational cohort that measured natural palmitoylethanolamide; it did not test PEA as a treatment and cannot show cause. Conflict of interest: none stated.
