Disease-Specific Derangement of Circulating Endocannabinoids and N-Acylethanolamines in Myeloproliferative Neoplasms
Observational studyHumans
- Design
- Observational study
- Subjects
- 55 patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (41 myelofibrosis, 9 polycythaemia vera, 5 essential thrombocythaemia) and 10 healthy controls
- Dose used in the study
- No palmitoylethanolamide was given; plasma levels were measured
- Duration
- Not stated in the abstract
- What was measured
- Plasma anandamide, palmitoylethanolamide, oleoylethanolamide, 2-AG and 1-AG by LC-MS/MS, compared across disease subtypes and with platelet count, JAK2V617F allele burden, splenomegaly and risk class.
What the authors reported
The study found:
- Overall, patients had lipid levels similar to controls.
- Anandamide correlated with platelet count.
- Myelofibrosis patients had higher 2-AG plus 1-AG than the other subtypes, higher OEA/AEA ratios than controls and ET patients, and higher OEA/PEA ratios than controls.
- The 2-AG plus 1-AG sum correlated with JAK2V617F allele frequency and splenomegaly.
Limits of this study
A small observational study with only 10 controls and 5 to 41 patients per subtype; it describes blood levels, not effects of taking PEA. The authors declare no conflicts of interest.
