Observational studyHumans

Design
Observational study
Subjects
23 patients with mastocytosis and 23 healthy people
Dose used in the study
No palmitoylethanolamide was given; plasma levels were measured
Duration
Cross-sectional
What was measured
Plasma PLA2 and PLC activity, diacylglycerols, 2-AG, anandamide, palmitoylethanolamide and oleoylethanolamide; relation to symptoms, severity and tryptase.

What the authors reported

The study found:

  • PLA2 and PLC activity and two diacylglycerols were higher in mastocytosis; 2-AG was unchanged.
  • Anandamide was lower and palmitoylethanolamide higher in patients than controls.
  • Enzyme activity was raised only in patients with mediator-related symptoms.
  • PLC activity correlated with severity and tryptase, and anandamide correlated negatively with tryptase.

Limits of this study

A small cross-sectional measurement study; no PEA was given and it cannot show cause. Funding and conflicts not stated in the abstract.
