A novel protective formulation of Palmitoylethanolamide in experimental model of contrast agent induced nephropathy
Laboratory studyOther animals
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Subjects
- Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats given contrast media, and a separate group of rats with surgical kidney removal
- Dose used in the study
- Ultramicronised PEA (PEA-um)
- Duration
- Not stated in the abstract
- What was measured
- Kidney function markers (creatinine, BUN), plasma sodium and potassium, urine and plasma NGAL and alpha-GST, kidney blood flow and tissue structure
What the authors reported
PEA-um reduced contrast-induced kidney dysfunction, normalised plasma sodium and potassium, and lowered urine and plasma NGAL and alpha-GST in diabetic rats. It also reduced creatinine and BUN and improved kidney blood flow and tissue structure after nephrectomy.
Limits of this study
An animal model combining diabetes, contrast exposure and surgical kidney removal; it cannot show effect in people receiving contrast media. Funding and conflicts not stated in the abstract.
