Joint Synovial Fluid Metabolomics Method to Decipher the Metabolic Mechanisms of Adjuvant Arthritis and Geniposide Intervention
Laboratory studyOther animalsWith geniposide (tested alone; PEA was a measured metabolite)
This study tested palmitoylethanolamide together with geniposide (tested alone; PEA was a measured metabolite). Its results cannot be assigned to palmitoylethanolamide alone. More combination studies.
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Subjects
- Rats with adjuvant arthritis and normal rats (numbers not stated in the abstract)
- Dose used in the study
- Geniposide; dose and route not stated in the abstract
- Duration
- Not stated in the abstract
- What was measured
- Untargeted metabolomics of joint synovial fluid collected by microdialysis, using HILIC high-resolution mass spectrometry, and NAAA protein in synovial tissue by Western blot
What the authors reported
Twenty metabolites differed between arthritic and normal rats. Geniposide restored 13 of them, including palmitoylethanolamide, a ceramide and a phosphatidylcholine, and normalised glycerophospholipid metabolism. The change in PEA went with lower NAAA expression in synovial tissue.
Limits of this study
A rat arthritis model; it cannot show effect in people. PEA was not given; it was one of the measured metabolites. Funding and conflicts not stated in the abstract.
