Palmitoylethanolamide Reduces Colon Cancer Cell Proliferation and Migration, Influences Tumor Cell Cycle and Exerts In Vivo Chemopreventive Effects
Laboratory studyHumansOther animals
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Subjects
- Colon cancer cell lines, and mice in an azoxymethane model of colon cancer
- Dose used in the study
- Ultramicronised PEA (um-PEA); concentration and in vivo dose not stated in the abstract
- Duration
- Not stated in the abstract
- What was measured
- Colon cancer cell proliferation, migration and cell cycle in vitro; number of preneoplastic lesions and tumours in azoxymethane-treated mice
What the authors reported
um-PEA inhibited cancer cell proliferation via PPAR-alpha and GPR55, caused G2/M cell cycle arrest (linked to cyclin B1/CDK1 upregulation) and DNA fragmentation, and reduced cell migration by lowering MMP2 and raising TIMP1. In the mouse model, it reduced the number of preneoplastic lesions and tumours.
Limits of this study
A cell-line and animal-model study; it cannot show effect in people. The authors declare no conflict of interest.
