- What was measured
- A narrative review of laboratory and clinical evidence in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, frontotemporal dementia, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis and related conditions
What the authors reported
Laboratory evidence points to protective and anti-inflammatory effects in models of the major neurodegenerative diseases, the authors report. Human evidence is mostly single case reports, with a small number of trials, including one of 29 patients with multiple sclerosis, and no documented side effects.
Limits of this study
The authors state that human clinical trials are limited, especially in Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease and frontotemporal dementia, and that the role in Huntington's disease is unclear. Case reports cannot show that a treatment works. The review was funded by the Italian Ministry of Health, and the authors declared no conflicts.
