Effect of PEA on LPS inflammatory action in human adipocytes

Hoareau L, Ravanan P, Gonthier MP, Delarue P, Goncalves J, Cesari M, Festy F, Roche R. Cytokine. 2006;34(5-6):291-296.

Laboratory studyHumans

Design
Laboratory study
Subjects
Human mature fat cells in culture
Dose used in the study
PEA added to culture with bacterial lipopolysaccharide
Duration
Cell culture
What was measured
IL-6 secretion via NF-kappa-B, and leptin release.

What the authors reported

PEA did not block the lipopolysaccharide-driven rise in IL-6, but it did strengthen the lipopolysaccharide-driven fall in leptin release. This suggests PEA is not anti-inflammatory at the fat-cell level for this pathway, the authors conclude.

Limits of this study

Cell study. Listed because it is one of the few papers reporting no anti-inflammatory effect in a human cell type, which balances the many positive mechanism papers. Independent French group.
