Efficacy and Safety of the Combination of Palmitoylethanolamide, Superoxide Dismutase, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Vitamins B12, B1, B6, E, Mg, Zn and Nicotinamide for 6 Months in People with Diabetic Neuropathy
Randomised controlled trialHumansWith superoxide dismutase, alpha lipoic acid, B vitamins, vitamin E, magnesium and zinc
This study tested palmitoylethanolamide together with superoxide dismutase, alpha lipoic acid, B vitamins, vitamin E, magnesium and zinc. Its results cannot be assigned to palmitoylethanolamide alone. More combination studies.
- Design
- Randomised controlled trial
- Subjects
- 73 people with type 2 diabetes and diabetic neuropathy at one centre: 36 on the combination and 37 on placebo
- Dose used in the study
- One combination tablet twice a day, with 300 mg of palmitoylethanolamide, 300 mg of alpha lipoic acid, superoxide dismutase, B vitamins, vitamin E, magnesium and zinc
- Duration
- 6 months
- What was measured
- Pain on the PainDETECT questionnaire, vibration perception, nerve conduction velocity, vitamin B12, autonomic tests and quality of life
What the authors reported
Pain scores fell from 20.9 to 13.9 in the combination group (p < 0.001) and did not change on placebo. Vibration perception and nerve conduction also improved in the combination group. No side effects were reported.
Limits of this study
The tablet had ten active ingredients, and the authors state that they cannot isolate the effect of any one. Vitamin B12 levels more than doubled, and B12 deficiency is itself a cause of neuropathy in people with diabetes. One centre and 6 months. Crossref lists the funder as Pharma Unimedis.
