Retrospective Evaluation of L-Acetyl Carnitine and Palmitoylethanolamide as Add-On Therapy in Patients with Fibromyalgia and Small Fiber Neuropathy
Observational studyHumansWith acetyl-L-carnitine, Boswellia serrata and vitamins B6 and E
This study tested palmitoylethanolamide together with acetyl-L-carnitine, Boswellia serrata and vitamins B6 and E. Its results cannot be assigned to palmitoylethanolamide alone. More combination studies.
- Design
- Observational study
- Subjects
- 86 patients with fibromyalgia after matching, 43 in each group
- Dose used in the study
- 600 mg of palmitoylethanolamide with 500 mg of acetyl-L-carnitine twice a day for 8 weeks, then once a day (Kalanit), added to standard care
- Duration
- 12 weeks
- What was measured
- The revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire
What the authors reported
A median fall of 19 points on the questionnaire in the add-on group (p < 0.001), versus 1 point in the standard care group (p = 0.12).
Limits of this study
A retrospective study of patient records, which the authors note is prone to selection bias. The product contains several active compounds, and the authors state that this prevents assigning the result to any one of them. The outcome was self-reported. The study received no external funding.
