Laboratory studyOther animals

Design
Laboratory study
Subjects
Rats with complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-induced temporomandibular joint (TMJ) inflammation
Dose used in the study
micronised PEA (m-PEA) 10 mg/kg or vehicle, given 1 hour after CFA injection
Duration
Assessed at 24 and 72 hours after CFA injection
What was measured
TMJ edema, mechanical allodynia, satellite glial cell activation (GFAP) and macrophage activation (Iba1) in the trigeminal ganglion.

What the authors reported

CFA-injected animals showed TMJ edema and mechanical allodynia along with increased GFAP-positive satellite glial cells and macrophage activation in the trigeminal ganglion. Micronised PEA significantly reduced TMJ damage and pain, and reduced macrophage activation and Iba1 upregulation.

Limits of this study

A rat model of TMJ inflammation; it cannot show effect in people. Funding and conflicts not stated in the abstract.
