Clinical and histological evaluation of an analogue of palmitoylethanolamide, PLR 120 (comicronized Palmidrol INN) in cats with eosinophilic granuloma and eosinophilic plaque: a pilot study
Open-label, no control groupCats
- Design
- Open-label, no control group
- Subjects
- 15 cats with eosinophilic granuloma or eosinophilic plaque
- Dose used in the study
- PLR 120 (comicronised palmidrol, a PEA formulation) 10 mg/kg twice daily; no other drugs allowed; parasite control maintained
- Duration
- 1 month, assessed at 15 and 30 days
- What was measured
- Clinical signs and lesions; skin biopsies before and after with mast cell counts and granule density
What the authors reported
10 of 15 cats (67 percent) improved clinically. Mast cell numbers did not change, but granule content per cell rose (p < 0.009), consistent with less degranulation.
Limits of this study
No control group, no blinding, 15 cats. Eosinophilic lesions can wax and wane. The earliest published PEA study in cats; the product was an experimental Innovet formulation.
