Laboratory studyOther animals

Design
Laboratory study
Subjects
Rat hepatic stellate cell line (LX-2); rats with carbon tetrachloride-induced liver fibrosis
Dose used in the study
In vitro, PEA added to LX-2 cells; in vivo, PEA 20 mg/kg intraperitoneally, three times weekly from week 3
Duration
4-week carbon tetrachloride protocol, with PEA given during weeks 3 and 4
What was measured
Hepatic stellate cell activation (alpha-SMA), TGF-beta1/SMAD signalling, fibrotic area, collagen deposition and Kupffer cell activation

What the authors reported

PEA reduced TGF-beta1-induced alpha-SMA expression and SMAD2 phosphorylation in hepatic stellate cells and upregulated SMAD7. In rats, it significantly reduced fibrotic area, type I collagen deposition and activation of hepatic stellate and Kupffer cells.

Limits of this study

A rat and cell-line model of liver fibrosis; it cannot show effect in people. Funding and conflicts not stated in the abstract.
