A New Palmitoylethanolamide Form Combined with Antioxidant Molecules to Improve Its Effectivess on Neuronal Aging

Morsanuto V, Galla R, Molinari C, Uberti F. Brain Sci. 2020 Jul 17;10(7):457.

Laboratory studyOther animalsWith lipoic acid and vitamin D3 (tested with a proprietary PEA formulation, FM-LipoMatrix)

This study tested palmitoylethanolamide together with lipoic acid and vitamin D3 (tested with a proprietary PEA formulation, FM-LipoMatrix). Its results cannot be assigned to palmitoylethanolamide alone. More combination studies.

Design
Laboratory study
Subjects
Intestinal barrier model and primary astrocyte cell cultures
Dose used in the study
Micronised PEA, FM-LipoMatrix PEA, or FM-LipoMatrix PEA plus lipoic acid and vitamin D3; concentrations not stated in the abstract
Duration
Not stated in the abstract
What was measured
Intestinal bioavailability; astrocyte cell viability, reactive oxygen species and nitric oxide production, NF-kB activity, MAPK, p53 and PPAR-alpha activity; cannabinoid and estrogen receptor levels by western blot

What the authors reported

The FM-LipoMatrix PEA formulation with lipoic acid and vitamin D3 showed better absorption than the other formulations, predicting higher plasma levels. This combination reduced ROS and NO production in astrocytes and was linked with cannabinoid and estrogen receptor interactions that lowered neuroinflammatory markers.

Limits of this study

A cell-culture and intestinal-barrier model study; it cannot show effect in people. The authors declare no conflict of interest; two authors co-founded the company noivita srls but report no commercial interest in the products studied.
