Co-ultramicronized Palmitoylethanolamide/Luteolin Promotes the Maturation of Oligodendrocyte Precursor Cells
Laboratory studyOther animalsWith luteolin
This study tested palmitoylethanolamide together with luteolin. Its results cannot be assigned to palmitoylethanolamide alone. More combination studies.
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Subjects
- Oligodendrocyte precursor cells cultured from newborn rat cortex
- Dose used in the study
- Co-ultramicronised PEA/luteolin (10:1 by mass), 10 micromolar in culture
- Duration
- Cells collected 1, 4 and 8 days after treatment
- What was measured
- Myelin basic protein (MBP) mRNA and protein expression, genes for lipid production, cell morphology and total protein content, compared with PEA or luteolin given alone or combined without co-ultramicronization.
What the authors reported
Co-ultramicronised PEA/luteolin produced a time-dependent rise in MBP mRNA and protein and in lipid-production genes, and promoted morphological maturation of the precursor cells without affecting their proliferation. Ultramicronised PEA or luteolin alone, or the two combined without co-ultramicronization, had no such effect.
Limits of this study
A cell-culture study using rat-derived precursor cells; it cannot show effect in people or animals. Funding and conflicts not stated in the abstract.
