Could serum endocannabinoid and N-acylethanolamine levels be important in bipolar disorder?
Observational studyHumans
- Design
- Observational study
- Subjects
- 79 people with bipolar disorder in a euthymic period (44 women, 35 men; mean age 42.40)
- Dose used in the study
- No palmitoylethanolamide was given; serum levels were measured
- Duration
- Not stated in the abstract
- What was measured
- Serum endocannabinoid and N-acylethanolamine levels by LC-MS/MS compared with clinical characteristics and symptom history.
What the authors reported
PEA levels were higher, and OEA and 2-AG lower, in patients with at least one lifetime depressive episode than in those with none; anandamide did not differ. PEA correlated with the history and frequency of depressive episodes and symptoms.
Limits of this study
An observational study with no healthy control group described in the abstract; PEA was measured, not given, and shows association only. Funding and conflicts not stated in the abstract.
