Giorgia Meineri, Luca Cocolin, Giada Morelli, Carlo Schievano, David Atuahene, Ilario Ferrocino. Vet Sci. 2023 Jul 3;10(7):434.

Controlled trialDogsWith bovine colostrum and Bacillus subtilis (Normalia Extra, Innovet)

This study tested palmitoylethanolamide together with bovine colostrum and Bacillus subtilis (Normalia Extra, Innovet). Its results cannot be assigned to palmitoylethanolamide alone. More combination studies.

Design
Controlled trial
Subjects
29 four-week-old Golden Retriever puppies: 13 control, 16 treated
Dose used in the study
A complementary feed of ultramicronised palmitoylethanolamide, bovine colostrum and Bacillus subtilis; amount not stated
Duration
4 weeks
What was measured
Average daily gain, faecal score, faecal calprotectin and zonulin, and faecal microbiota composition.

What the authors reported

The trial found:

  • No difference in daily gain or faecal score.
  • Faecal zonulin and calprotectin were lower in the treated group, most clearly at week 8 (zonulin 42.8 vs 55.3 ng/mL; calprotectin 2.91 vs 5.71 micrograms/g; p < 0.0001 for both).
  • Campylobacterota decreased (p = 0.04) and Coprococcus and Pseudomonas increased (p = 0.01 and p = 0.04).

Limits of this study

A small study of 29 puppies from one breed; the abstract does not mention a placebo or blinding. PEA was combined with colostrum and a probiotic, so effects cannot be assigned to PEA. One author is employed by Innovet, which makes the product.
