Levels of bioactive endogenous lipids and health-related quality of life in Chronic Idiopathic Axonal Polyneuropathy
Observational studyHumans
- Design
- Observational study
- Subjects
- 48 patients with chronic idiopathic axonal polyneuropathy, 21 of whom reported neuropathic pain
- Dose used in the study
- Not stated in the abstract; no treatment was given
- Duration
- Not stated in the abstract
- What was measured
- Plasma 2-AG, OEA, palmitoylethanolamide and SEA; SF-36 and EQ-5D quality-of-life questionnaires; clinical findings.
What the authors reported
Patients with neuropathic pain had lower 2-AG (P = 0.03) but no difference in PEA (P = 0.95), OEA or SEA. PEA, SEA and 2-AG were lower in patients with loss of vibration sense, and PEA and SEA lower with loss of pain and temperature sense, but these differences were not significant after correction for multiple comparisons.
Limits of this study
A small observational study that measured natural palmitoylethanolamide in blood; it did not test PEA as a treatment. Most lipid differences did not survive statistical correction. The authors report no conflicts of interest.
