The anti-inflammatory effects of palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) on endotoxin-induced uveitis in rats
Laboratory studyOther animals
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Subjects
- Rats given a footpad injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to induce endotoxin-induced uveitis
- Dose used in the study
- PEA, given into the abdomen 1 hour before and 7 hours after LPS injection; dexamethasone used as a positive control
- Duration
- Rats examined 16 hours after LPS injection
- What was measured
- Inflammatory cell infiltration and histological damage in the iris-ciliary body, TNF-alpha levels, protein leakage, lipid peroxidation, ICAM-1 and nitrotyrosine staining, and iNOS and NF-kB expression.
What the authors reported
PEA reduced inflammatory cell infiltration and histological eye damage, lowered TNF-alpha, protein leakage and lipid peroxidation, and reduced ICAM-1 and nitrotyrosine staining. It also reduced iNOS expression and NF-kB movement into the cell nucleus.
Limits of this study
A rat model of endotoxin-induced eye inflammation; it cannot show effect in people with uveitis. Funding and conflicts not stated in the abstract.
