Palmitoylethanolamide Ameliorates Hippocampal Damage and Behavioral Dysfunction After Perinatal Asphyxia in the Immature Rat Brain
Laboratory studyOther animals
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Subjects
- Newborn Sprague Dawley rats subjected to perinatal asphyxia (water-bath model)
- Dose used in the study
- PEA 10 mg/kg, given within the first hour of life
- Duration
- Assessed 1 month after the asphyxia insult
- What was measured
- Hippocampal neuronal damage (electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, western blot) and behaviour (Open Field, Passive Avoidance, Elevated Plus Maze).
What the authors reported
Perinatal asphyxia caused CA1 neuronal degeneration and changes in neurofilament and GFAP markers, with vertical exploration impairment and anxiety-related behaviour. PEA treatment lessened the hippocampal damage and the behavioural changes caused by perinatal asphyxia.
Limits of this study
A neonatal rat model of perinatal asphyxia; it cannot show effect in people. Funding and conflicts not stated in the abstract.
