Laboratory studyDogs

Design
Laboratory study
Subjects
Skin samples from 7 healthy dogs and 8 dogs with atopic dermatitis
Dose used in the study
Not stated in the abstract; no treatment was given
Duration
Not stated in the abstract
What was measured
Immunofluorescence for CB1, CB2, GPR55, TRPV1, TRPA1, PPAR-alpha and 5-HT1a receptors in skin keratinocytes, with quantitative scoring.

What the authors reported

Keratinocytes of both healthy and atopic dogs showed all seven receptors. CB2, TRPA1 and 5-HT1a were significantly upregulated in the epidermis of dogs with atopic dermatitis. These receptors, including PPAR-alpha, a palmitoylethanolamide target, are present in canine skin.

Limits of this study

A small tissue study of 15 dogs that measured receptors only; no palmitoylethanolamide or other treatment was tested, so it cannot show effect in dogs treated in practice. The authors declare no commercial or financial relationships.
