Astrocytic palmitoylethanolamide pre-exposure exerts neuroprotective effects in astrocyte-neuron co-cultures from a triple transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer's disease
Laboratory studyOther animals
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Subjects
- Cortical astrocyte-neuron co-cultures from 3xTg-AD mice and wild-type mice
- Dose used in the study
- Palmitoylethanolamide 0.1 micromolar applied to astrocytes for 24 hours before co-culture
- Duration
- 24-hour pre-exposure
- What was measured
- Neuronal viability, apoptotic nuclei, MAP2-positive cells, neurite aggregations, dendritic branches, cell body area, longest dendrite length and neurites per neuron.
What the authors reported
This lab study found:
- 3xTg-AD neurons co-cultured with 3xTg-AD astrocytes showed more apoptotic nuclei, less MAP2 and morphological changes than wild-type co-cultures.
- These signs were significantly reduced when the astrocytes had been pre-exposed to PEA.
- Pre-exposing astrocytes to amyloid-beta-42 had no effect in the 3xTg-AD co-cultures.
Limits of this study
A cell culture study from a mouse model; it cannot show effect in people. No numbers are given in the abstract. The authors declare no conflict of interest.
