Laboratory studyOther animals

Design
Laboratory study
Subjects
Primary mouse cortical astrocyte-neuron co-cultures
Dose used in the study
PEA 0.1 micromol/L, applied to astrocytes 1 hour before and during amyloid-beta42 (0.5 micromol/L) exposure
Duration
24-hour amyloid-beta42 exposure
What was measured
Neuronal viability, apoptosis and neurite morphology in astrocyte-neuron co-cultures.

What the authors reported

Astrocytes pre-exposed to amyloid-beta42 lowered neuronal viability, raised apoptotic nuclei counts, reduced MAP-2 positive neuron numbers, and increased neurite aggregation. These effects did not occur when astrocytes were pre-exposed to PEA before amyloid-beta42.

Limits of this study

A mouse cell-culture study; it cannot show effect in animals or people. Funding and conflicts not stated in the abstract.
