Effects of Palmitoylethanolamide Combined with Luteoline on Frontal Lobe Functions, High Frequency Oscillations, and GABAergic Transmission in Patients with Frontotemporal Dementia
Open-label, no control groupHumansWith luteolin (PEA-LUT)
This study tested palmitoylethanolamide together with luteolin (PEA-LUT). Its results cannot be assigned to palmitoylethanolamide alone. More combination studies.
- Design
- Open-label, no control group
- Subjects
- 17 patients with probable frontotemporal dementia
- Dose used in the study
- Palmitoylethanolamide with luteolin (PEA-LUT) 700 mg twice daily
- Duration
- 4 weeks
- What was measured
- Neuropsychiatric Inventory, MMSE, Frontal Assessment Battery, aphasia screening, activities of daily living and FTLD-CDR; transcranial magnetic stimulation measures of cortical plasticity and intracortical inhibition; TMS-EEG frontal cortical oscillations.
What the authors reported
This open-label study found:
- After 4 weeks, NPI and Frontal Assessment Battery scores improved.
- Long-interval intracortical inhibition was restored, particularly at 100 ms, which the authors link to GABA-B activity.
- TMS-EEG showed increased frontal lobe evoked activity and more beta/gamma high-frequency oscillations.
- No numbers are given in the abstract.
Limits of this study
An uncontrolled study of 17 patients with no placebo group, so improvement cannot be separated from placebo or measurement effects. The abstract reports no effect sizes. Funding and conflicts not stated in the abstract.
