Effect of palmitoylethanolamide on inflammatory and neuropathic pain in rats
Laboratory studyOther animals
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Subjects
- Male Sprague-Dawley rats with spinal nerve transection (neuropathic pain) or intra-articular monoiodoacetic acid (inflammatory pain)
- Dose used in the study
- PEA given by intraperitoneal and intra-articular injection; exact dose not stated in the abstract
- Duration
- Not stated in the abstract
- What was measured
- Mechanical and cold sensitivity (von Frey filaments, acetone test) and paw withdrawal responses
What the authors reported
Spinal nerve transection lowered the mechanical threshold and raised acetone-response frequency, but not cold-withdrawal frequency. PEA, by intraperitoneal and intra-articular injection, significantly reduced mechanical hyperalgesia from chronic inflammation, but did not reduce cold allodynia.
Limits of this study
Rat models of neuropathic and inflammatory pain; it cannot show effect in people. Funding and conflicts not stated in the abstract.
