Palmitoylethanolamide Supplementation during Sensitization Prevents Airway Allergic Symptoms in the Mouse
Laboratory studyOther animals
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Subjects
- Mice sensitized with ovalbumin (OVA) to model allergic airway sensitization
- Dose used in the study
- PEA 10 mg/kg, given 15 minutes before each allergen exposure
- Duration
- Sensitization period with repeated allergen exposures
- What was measured
- Bronchial PEA levels, CB2 and GPR55 receptor expression, bronchial hyperreactivity, IgE, pulmonary inflammation, mast cell recruitment/degranulation and leukotriene C4
What the authors reported
OVA sensitisation lowered bronchial PEA levels and raised CB2 and GPR55 receptor expression. PEA supplementation prevented OVA-induced bronchial hyperreactivity and reduced pulmonary inflammation, mast cell recruitment and degranulation, and leukotriene C4 production, without affecting the IgE rise.
Limits of this study
A mouse model of allergic sensitization; it cannot show effect in people with asthma. Funding and conflicts not stated in the abstract.
